The "Cheese County Trail" is located in Southwestern
Wisconsin, from Monroe, WI, to Mineral Point, WI. The trail is just
6 miles from the Illinois border. It parallels the Pecatonica River,
and is the former bed of the Milwaukee Road railroad. Along the trail you will see beautifully contoured fields with strips of hay and corn, bluegrass pastures with horses, beef and dairy cattle leisurely grazing the land. You will find steep, forested hillsides of Oak, Hickory and Maple, and river valleys and streams with catfish and smallmouth bass. The old rail corridor has segments of native tall grass prairie and wildflowers, relics of majestic prairies of the buffalo days. Bald eagle, songbirds, deer, coyote, wild turkey, beaver, pheasants, ruffed grouse and many other species of wildlife can be seen and heard. It was this area which attracted settlers in 1825 when news of Indian mining lead brought inquisitive miners. Thousands of tons were mined until 1849 when gold was discovered in California. Wisconsin became a state in 1848 and the land on which this railroad bed is located was purchased in 1853. The last train ran the line in February 1985 and this trail will be used for recreation until it might once again be needed for rail transportation. Be courteous to other users. Motorized vehicles should yield to non-motorized vehicles. Limit your speed-safety is our prime concern. Your behavior will determine which use will be allowed in the future. We fully intend to maintain good relationships with the abutting landowners. PLEASE STAY ON THE TRAIL AND OFF PRIVATE PROPERTY.
TRESPASSING WILL NOT BE TOLERATED. PLEASE RIDE RESPONSIBLY!
